Need help setting up a screening in your area? Here are a few tips to get you on your way:
LINKS
Check out the screenings threads on ETS and nin.com to find out if something is already being organised in your area, or if anyone is interested in coming to one that you may be organising
WHERE?
- Ask your local theater, town hall, or bar if you can hold a free screening event for a night. Most venues will give you the room for free if you let them keep bar money.
- If you're still a student or have access to your school's theater/ a screening classroom, ask to use either for a public viewing.
- Have a screening at your house (if you have a home theater, or a projector, or a large fucking tv, etc.) if you feel comfortable having people over.
- Why not have a virtual screening? If you know of an online space that you would like to introduce to the DVD, link them to youtube clips, the torrents and direct downloads.
- Does your local nightclub play DVDs on projection screens? Pass along a copy of the DVD and ask them to add it to their pool
- Guerrila street teaming has been quite popular in the history of the community - from NIN Hotline flyers being handed out at Fragility shows, to the ARG, and kids slipping TOIOU flyers in their school libraries. Why not burn a couple of DVDs and leave them lying around, in the NIN section of your local record store, at a cafe, or even an art gallery.
HOW?
- We ask that you respect the wishes of the band and TOIOU and not charge for entry or merchandise. Make this clear to venues, and mention that they can make a profit off of food and drink sales from the event.
- Gauge interest locally - not every nin fan will check this website, twitter, or the forums, so flyer around your neighborhood, post to local websites, and highlight that it's free - college students especially LOVE free
- Make drinking game out of it with friends - eg drink whenever Robin pulls a weird face, Trent says "HUH!" or you can actually see Alessandro. (I'm kidding, of course. I think.)
- If someone else has set up a screening in your area, offer to burn copies of the DVD to hand out for people who don't have one (for free, of course).
- Use links to our trailers and flyers, or make your own using stock graphics (search "toiou" on flickr and youtube) to promote/pitch to venues
- Don't be afraid to use our flyers or make your own ads and put them up downtown/put ads on craigstlist, etc. Pre-made ads can be found on zazzle to post where you like - it is a not for profit account, and goes to promoting the NIN community.
- Why not have flyers at screenings promoting all the great things NIN fans can do? Mention The NIN Hotline, Reflecting in the Chrome, After All Is Said And Done, NINWiki, our collector culture (which will relentlessly drive out anyone who tries to sell this DVD!), our meetups, our Grateful Dead tour lifestyles. Warm up the crowd by playing some clips from the Interview and Live Essentials. Make your screening an event, and a celebration of everything this community has to be proud of.
- Why stop with this DVD? As previously mentioned, there are dozens of NIN fan DVDs already available for free download and distribution, from live clips, to interview compilations, to lost videos. Get in touch with the makers (often the torrent creators) and enlighten people on one of the most progressive and integrity-conscious artists of recent times.
